Painting Part 1: Base Coats

We’re working directly from the SKS Props tutorial here. I took the masks to work, where I have access to a genuine paint spray hood in the machine shop.

First was two coats of black PlastiDip spray. I was concerned that the plastic might obscure all the texturing work we’d done on the foam, but to my very pleasant surprise, the spray as it cured conformed very tightly to the surfaces and it all shows beautifully!

Next was a very light coat of Kryolan Red Oxide primer, light enough that the black can still show through. Fortunately for my fingernails, both the black and the red oxide paints proved amenable to removal with isopropyl alcohol immediately after I was done spraying 🙂

The following morning, all the paint has cured, and the effect is great. (And all of this is going to disappear under the lighter colors to follow). One nice thing about the Kryolan over the PlastiDip — the surface now has a dry rather than rubbery texture. Also of note is how well the deeper features stand out as the light coat of Red Oxide didn’t fill in all the sutures, etc!
