Leather has a mystique all its own: its texture, finish, drape, flexibility, durability and even scent lend a unique stamp to garments and goods fashioned from it. It can also be one of the more challenging materials with which to work, a reputation which frightens many otherwise capable artisans from making the attempt.
In this workshop, costumer and former "Mr. Leather" Kevin Roche will do his best to get you comfortable with including leather and basic leatherwork techniques in your designs.

First, a discussion of different leatherwork techniques will be illustrated with a show-and-tell session of some of his work. Techniques to be discussed will include cutting, stitching, gluing, molding, punching, studding, dying and painting. This part of the workshop will include tips and tricks for integrating leather into other designs, what kind of tools to use, and some do's and don'ts Kevin has learned along the way.

In the second part of the workshop, you will get some hands-on experience creating for yourself a simple glued-and-stitched leather belt, and decorating it with ornamental studwork. While this is a modest project, it should be easily completed by the end of the day, and will give everyone a chance to actually work with some of the techniques, as well as a handsome and usable keepsake to take home at the end of the day.

There will be a materials fee for the leather, belt hardware and studs used in the workshop.
Note that while the room will be well-ventilated, the contact adhesives (similar to Barge ™ Cement) used for the belt-making project contain volatile solvents, which may irritate sensitive individuals.
